James Vaughan bagged a hat-trick and NEIL DANNS notched the other as Crystal Palace saw off Portsmouth 4-1.

The on-loan Everton striker got a treble on his home debut for the Eagles to give Palace their first league win since the opening day of the season.

Vaughan put Palace ahead in the 14th minute with a neat turn and powerful finish from Owen Garven's pass.

Pompey were level 10 minutes later after a horrendous defensive mix-up. Eagles stopper Julian Speroni came out of his area to deal with a long ball and defender Anthony Gardner did not see him so nodded back but into the path of Dave Kitson who scored in an empty net.

Vaughan nabbed his second goal by racing onto Alex Marrow's long ball and lobbing Jamie Ashdown.

And the 22-year-old completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark with another lobbed effort.

DANNS scored with a penalty in the 81st minute after he was fouled in the box by Michael Brown to add a bit of gloss to the scoreline.

Palace: Speroni, Gardner, McCarthy, Clyne, DANNS (Counago 89 ), Garvan, Dorman, Djilali, Marrow, Cadogan, Vaughan (Andrew 81).

Portsmouth: Ashdown, Sonko, Rocha, Dickinson, Ward, Lawrence, Brown, Mullins, Kitson, Nugent, Kanu (Utaka 74).
